Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme – Phase 3

The Queensland Government is providing $150,000 to support the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland (MPAQ) deliver Phase 3 of the Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme (the scheme).

Since 2021, the Queensland Government has provided funding to MPAQ to purchase purpose-built bins that are used at plumbing businesses and construction sites for individuals and businesses to separate clean PVC.

Phase 3 of the scheme will see it expand into regional Queensland and fund an additional 24 bins, bringing the total number of bins to 40. The new bins will be located throughout South East and regional Queensland for customer use.

PVC is a widely used plastic polymer in the construction industry which, when separated, has a high recyclability rate where clean piping, offcuts and fittings can be reprocessed and manufactured into new PVC piping.

The scheme is underpinned by collaboration between industry partners including pipe suppliers, plumbing businesses, construction sites and recyclers.

The scheme is also to be used at participating Queensland TAFE campuses to teach separation and recycling behaviours to the next generation of Queensland plumbers.
