Manage your apprenticeship or traineeship

Once you've set up your apprenticeship or traineeship and been through induction, your apprenticeship or traineeship is well underway.

From now until completion, all you need to do is:

  • finish probation
  • fulfil your responsibilities (set out in the training contract)
  • resolve issues if problems arise
  • make changes if your situation does.

Probation

Use your probation to decide whether to commit to your apprenticeship or traineeship or discontinue it.

Your probation lasts for 30–90 days as a trainee, or 90 days as an apprentice.

Ongoing responsibilities

Now that you've signed a training contract and a general employment contract, your ongoing responsibilities are to:

  • turn up for work
  • do training and assessment tasks (as outlined in your training plan)
  • follow your supervisor's instructions and workplace health and safety rules
  • let your boss know why you can't come to work or attend training
  • update your training record and show it regularly to your boss and training organisation.

Resolving issues

Our experience is that if problems occur, they will happen in the early stage of your contract.

Our advice is to:

  1. deal with your problems early (to prevent a breakdown between parties)
  2. ask your Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider early on for help
  3. use mediation to help resolve it.

Making changes

Your situation may change during your apprenticeship or traineeship, for example, you might want to:

  • change employer, training organisation or school
  • pause your apprenticeship or traineeship
  • move interstate.

Cancellation

Cancelling a training contract should be your last resort. Rather than cancelling, consider other options such as:

  • changing your qualification or working hours (e.g. from full-time to part-time)
  • changing employers, temporarily or permanently
  • pausing your apprenticeship or traineeship.
