Are you an e-scooter rider?

E-scooters, e-skateboards, and similar devices are a cleaner, greener way to get around. But as these devices grow in popularity, it's more important than ever that we keep riders and other road users safe.

To help improve safety, new rules and increased fines for riders of e-scooters (or personalised mobility devices) apply from 1 November 2022.

The new rules include a new 12km/hr speed limit on footpaths, new speeding fines, access to some bike lanes, and bigger fines for using your mobile phone.

The fine for most offences, such as not wearing a helmet or doubling with a passenger, is $143. Increased fines apply for some higher risk behaviours, such as speeding (up to $575) and using a mobile phone while riding ($1,078).

The rules were developed after extensive consultation with local councils and several stakeholder groups.
