About the region

The North and North West Queensland region spreads from the Great Barrier Reef to the Northern Territory border and through the lower Gulf region.

This region links the mineral resources, cities and towns of the North West with the natural resources, food production, processing and logistics hub of North Queensland.

Townsville, as the largest regional centre in northern Australia, provides export pathways for the processed minerals along with agricultural and horticultural produce from across the region.

This is the sporting heart of regional Queensland. It is the home of both the men’s and women’s North Queensland Cowboys National Rugby League teams as well as the current Women’s National Basketball League champions, Townsville Fire.

The largest base of Australian Defence Force members in Australia is located in this region alongside thriving arts, health and tertiary education sectors.

The North and North West Queensland region brings together a multicultural population that drives northern Australia’s economic powerhouse. Along with numerous industries and a healthy community and social sector, the region is an emerging renewable energy zone which will drive employment opportunities for regional, rural and remote communities into the future.
