About the region

More than 290,000 people populate the Far North Queensland region which spreads from the Torres Strait Islands south to Cardwell and inland to the Gulf Savannah.

This region covers approximately 20 per cent of Queensland and attracts millions of domestic and international tourists annually given it is home to two World Heritage listed areas, the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Area which includes the Daintree Rainforest.

Far North Queensland contributes to a vast array of industries including tourism, mining, marine, agriculture, horticulture and livestock but also aviation, defence, construction, manufacturing, engineering and more.

The world’s largest silica and bauxite mines can be found here alongside key produce such as sugar cane, bananas, mangoes, papaya, lychees and coffee.
