Smartraveller is the Australian Government's travel advisory and consular information service.

Stay safe on your next overseas trip with these Smartraveller tips:

  • Check the latest travel advice for your destination and subscribe to receive free email notifications
  • Take out appropriate travel insurance
  • Register your travel and contact details online
  • Obey the law—consular assistance cannot override local laws
  • Check visa requirements for each country you are visiting
  • Contact the embassy or high commission of each country you intend to visit to confirm the entry requirements
  • Leave copies of your travel documents and credit card details with someone at home
  • Check recommended vaccinations and medicine laws for each country you are visiting
  • Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your planned date of return to Australia
  • Leave a copy of your travel itinerary with someone at home and keep in regular contact with friends and relatives while overseas
  • Research whether holding dual nationality will affect your travel
