Posted 16 March 2012
People with a disability have shared their advice about overcoming accessibility issues with using popular social media tools such as Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter and Skype, in a new Australian report, Sociability: Social media for people with a disability.
The report has been developed as part of an accessibility review by Media Access Australia, a not-for-profit organisation devoted to increasing access to media for people with disabilities; with funding provided by the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network.
It includes guides about using popular social media tools, such as:
Practical guides and tip sheets for each social media tool are provided, as well as an overview of accessibility issues with using the tool and advice for overcoming issues.
People with various disabilities, from different age groups and with different patterns of social media use contributed advice about using social media tools as part of the research.
Information about social media, the current state of accessibility for social media tools, social media trends and the accessibility of computers and mobile devices is included in the Sociability report.
In addition to helping people with disability access social media tools in a more accessible way, the review aims to inform decision makers, such as disability advocates and employers, about social media accessibility.
