Preparing for a cyclone

Posted 6 January 2012

An Easy English guide about preparing for a cyclone in Queensland is available for people with complex communication needs.

The guide, GET READY... for cyclones!, has been developed by ARC Disability Services, in conjunction with the Cairns Regional Council.

It uses symbols and simple language to communicate the safety message of ‘Plan, Pack, Listen' during the cyclone season, and is designed so a communication partner or parent can discuss questions with a person about topics including:

  • What is a cyclone?
  • What things happen before a cyclone comes?
  • What might happen during a cyclone?
  • Things I need to get ready: My checklist
  • What should I do to keep safe in a cyclone?
  • What might happen after the cyclone?

There is space for a person to include their own comments, feelings and thoughts as they work through the questions in the guide.

Emergency contact details are also provided.

How can I get a copy?

You can download a copy of GET READY... for cyclones! from the Cairns Regional Council website. Copies are also available in person from ARC Disability Services in Cairns and Cairns Regional Council's Customer Service Centres in Cairns and Mossman.
