Drink driving short course

From Friday 10 September 2021, all drivers who commit and are convicted of a drink driving offence will need to complete a short online drink driving course.

If you don’t complete the course, you won’t be able to apply for your driver licence for 5 years:

  • from the end of your disqualification period
    or
  • from the date you were granted a work licence by a court.

About the course

The first-time drink driving course is called Plan.Drive.Survive. Foundations.

To complete the course you will need to:

  • enrol in the course and pay a fee, you will have access for 12 months
  • have access to a smart device or computer and connection to the internet
  • allow at least 1 hour to complete the course
  • complete a series of modules online.

You can complete the course anytime during your disqualification period. When you complete the course successfully it remains valid for 5 years. This means if you are convicted of drink driving again within 5 years of completing the course, you won't have to do it again. However, you may need to complete the repeat drink driving course

No internet access

If you don't have internet access at home or another location like a library, you can request a printed version of the course from your nearest transport and motoring customer service centre.

Scenarios for having to complete the short online drink driving course

We created a few scenarios to help determine if you need to complete the course. The scenarios are based on drink driving offences committed and convicted before or after Friday 10 September 2021.

Scenario 1: commit and convicted before 10 September

If you committed a drink driving offence in July 2021 and were convicted by the court in August 2021, you won’t need to complete the first-time drink driving course.

Scenario 2: commit before 10 September, convicted after 10 September

If you committed a drink driving offence in August 2021 and are convicted on September 15, you won’t need to complete the first-time drink driving program.

Scenario 3: commit and convicted after 10 September

If you committed a drink driving offence on or after 10 September 2021, and were convicted later that month, you would need to complete the course.

Scenario 4: commit and convicted of a repeat offence

If you committed and were convicted of your first drink driving offence in 2019, and committed and convicted of another drink driving offence in late-October 2021 you would need to complete the course.

A court would consider you a repeat offender, but we would consider you a first-time offender for the purpose of these drink driving education programs.
