Description: From beautifully crafted volumes with marbled edges and leather tooling to simple, durable books built to withstand decades of use, each record tells a unique story far beyond the information it holds.
These books aren’t just documents—they are windows into how Queensland grew, how decisions were made and how systems evolved over time.
Come and see these remarkable records up close by visiting our exhibition space. Marvel at their intricate designs of the records and consider what they reveal about the systems that kept Queensland running throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Description: Join experienced archivist Saadia Thomson Dwyer to learn the tips and tricks to reading and transcribing cursive handwriting.
Using examples of original records, inspired by our Printed & Bound exhibition, Saadia will help you recognise the different styles of writing and take you through a range of transcription activities to help develop your skills.

QSA workshop: Water marbling

Description: Make your own marbled paper in this free, hands-on workshop, presented as part of our Printed & Bound exhibition.
Guided by artist Bronwyn Rayner, you'll learn about water marbling history, terminology, pattern making, tools and materials, and leave the workshop with several of your very own marbled paper creations.

QSA workshop: Make your own notebook

Date: Thursday 2 April 2026
Time: 10.00am–1.00pm
Description: Make your own A6 notebook from start to finish in this free, hands-on workshop.
The design of the notebook is inspired by original examples held at Queensland State Archives, on display in our Printed & Bound exhibition, connecting your notebook to the kinds of books which were once ubiquitous in capturing Queensland Government history.
Guided by expert bookbinder Darryn Schneider, you’ll learn how notebooks like these were constructed as you make your own notebook to take home. No experience is required and all materials are provided.
