What you should know

There are certain rules you must follow when visiting a youth in detention.

If you agree to being on their visit list, your approval will apply to their current stay in youth detention as well as any future stays.

You should contact the youth detention centre the youth is at if you want to withdraw your approval.

Your privacy

CCTV and body worn cameras are used in youth detention centres. Audio and video footage is recorded. Only certain staff are allowed to watch the video. It will only be shared with other people or organisations if the law tells us to. Recordings may be used as evidence.

Who can use this service

You can arrange to visit if you are:

  • family
  • friends
  • an important member of their community like Elders
  • a chaplain or a religious visitor
  • a community group
  • their lawyer
  • their youth justice or child support caseworker
  • an official visitor
  • a non-government agency.

Don't use this service if:

  • the youth is in detention in another state
    Instead, apply in that state or territory.

How to arrange a visit to a youth in youth detention

Step 1: Call the youth detention centre

You will need to find the youth detention centre where the youth is at.

Each centre has set visiting times. You can make special arrangements if you can’t visit during these hours.
