What you should know
You must get permission to conduct research using any of Queensland Corrective Services staff or facilities, offenders under our supervision, or data we hold.
QCS Research and Evaluation Committee assesses research applications based on:
- feasibility and impact on operations
- potential value to the existing knowledge base
- alignment with the QCS strategic plan 2026-30
- whether an ethical and robust method is proposed.
Who can use this service
You can submit a research application if you are:
- an academic employed by a higher education institution
- a Masters or PhD student
- a health practitioner or researcher
- a corrective services employee doing post-graduate study.
Applications to conduct research with QCS are not accepted from prisoners in custody or offenders currently under supervision.
How to submit a research application to Queensland Corrective Services
Step 1: Read the research guidelines
Step 2: Gather your documents
Gather your supporting documents for your research proposal.

Step 3: Email request for permission
You must request permission from the QCS Research and Evaluation Committee to conduct research.
Email your application and supporting documents to research@corrections.qld.gov.au.
Step 4: Receive the outcome
The QCS Research and Evaluation Committee Secretariat will give you feedback on your application, ideally within 10 business days. It may take up to 20 business days if your application requires consultation with multiple QCS business areas.
Step 5: Committee consideration
Final applications are reviewed and presented at the QCS Research and Evaluation Committee meetings.
The Committee meets three times each year to review applications and make decisions to recommend that projects proceed or not proceed. The final outcome advice will be provided after the Commissioner approves the Committee recommendations.
How long it takes
Processing times begins when a completed application is received. You are encouraged to submit an application well in advance of your research due date.
