Description
Join us for the official opening of Riding the First Wave: Mid-19th century immigration from China.
Developed by historian Dr Hilda Maclean and artist Pamela See (Xue Mei-Ling) in partnership with the Harry Gentle Resource Centre at Griffith University, this new exhibition explores the lives and legacy of the first Chinese labourers who arrived in Moreton Bay from Amoy (present-day Xiamen) between 1847 and 1853.
Through archival records, contemporary paper-cut artworks and stories shared by descendants, the exhibition reveals a little-known chapter of Queensland's history and celebrates the contribution these early migrants made to our development and identity.
Exploring themes of migration, resilience and belonging, Riding the First Wave brings together historical records and contemporary artistic interpretation to connect past experiences with the present.
At this event, you can:
- discover a little-known chapter of Queensland's history
- explore archival records documenting early Chinese migration
- experience contemporary artworks inspired by archival collections
- connect with community members, researchers and cultural heritage professionals.
Whether you have an interest in Queensland history, migration stories, family history, archives, art or community heritage, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage with stories that have helped shape Queensland's diverse identity.
