Be part of our Healthy Kindy Kids program

We're offering free vision, hearing, speech and language screening for eligible children in approved kindergarten programs. It’s called Healthy Kindy Kids screening.

To be eligible, children must be enrolled in and attend a government-approved kindergarten and have turned 4 on or before 30 June in the year of screening.

The screening activities are play-based and are designed to fit in with your regular kindergarten day.

Early screening helps:

• identify children who might need extra support before they start school
• connect families with the right services.

Healthy Kindy Kids is being rolled out in stages across Queensland.

The program is not yet available in all areas; but will be available throughout Queensland by the end of 2028. Your local Healthy Kindy Kids team will contact your kindergarten when the program becomes available in your area.

Planning a Healthy Kindy Kids visit

Your team will play a big part in helping the children and their families understand the process and feel at ease.

We usually do the screening over a couple of days, so we have enough time to see all the children.

Before we visit

Once your service has agreed to host the Healthy Kindy Kids program, our team will contact you to:

• arrange a suitable date for our visit
• explain what happens on the day
• answer any questions you may have about the program.

We'll meet with you about a month before we visit to talk about the program, including:

• how our screening team works
• the screenings we'll do
• what happens on the day
• roles and responsibilities, including how to opt into the program
• any questions you have.

We want to make sure you feel confident talking to parents, carers and children about the program.

We'll need your help to make sure screening runs smoothly. We'll talk to you about what’s needed before, during and after. We’ll also ask you to provide a suitable screening space, furniture and staff to support children during screening.

We'll give you a Kindergarten Onboarding Guide, which includes resources to help you prepare for our visit.

Follow up and support

We're developing local referral pathways for children that need support to help parents and carers:

• find and access local services
• get any support or referrals they need.
