The new Bundaberg Hospital moves ahead with major contractor engaged

One of Queensland’s largest health infrastructure projects is back on track with the Queensland Government announcing the major contractor to deliver the new Bundaberg Hospital, as part of the fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan.

CPB Contractors have been engaged on the project and will power ahead with works ahead of construction of Stage 1, which will deliver more than 200 new hospital beds and treatment areas by 2031.

Once complete, the new hospital will provide more than 410 new beds and treatment spaces, including at least 139 additional overnight beds, a larger emergency department, expanded outpatient, diagnostic and surgical services, more operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad.

Main works construction will begin later this year, with lift cores and the first ground slab poured by year’s end.

It’s an exciting time for Bundaberg residents, especially Lisa Marie, who has been a consumer representative on the design of the new Bundaberg Hospital’s maternity and neonatal ward.

“It’s been exciting and fulfilling to be part of the design of the new maternity ward,” Lisa Marie said.

“Unfortunately, in 2019 I lost a child who was stillborn at full term, so I’m helping design a space that supports mothers and families through birth - it’s my legacy to my son.

“Now seeing the machines working and the dust flying — it’s such a massive site − so it’s exciting to see it come off the plan.”

The expanded emergency department, outpatient, diagnostic and surgical services, and additional operating rooms will not only benefit patients but help attract more clinicians to work regionally.

Medical interns like Christi, who grew up in Bundaberg, are also excited to see the project take shape.

“I’m very excited to be coming back to the place where I grew up and have that sense of community,” she said.

“Working in Bundaberg is a really unique experience. I get to work on a variety of different presentations and a being in a regional hospital, it’s very hands-on−which has been fantastic.

“Being back in Bundaberg, the intern satisfaction rating is high, the doctors and everyone have been so supportive and inclusive.”

The new Bundaberg Hospital is the largest health infrastructure investment ever delivered in the Wide Bay region and is a key milestone of the Hospital Rescue Plan.
