Grassroots Environmental Grants

The Grassroots Environmental Grants program is available to eligible recipients to support projects aimed at protecting and preserving Queensland's natural and built environment.

These small grants are designed to encourage community engagement and focus on delivering impactful local environmental initiatives.

Funding rounds are offered annually to assist communities across Queensland’s towns, rural centres, and cities, in addressing grassroots environmental protection and preservation concerns within their local areas.

Round 1: Koala Habitat Restoration

Applications are now open for the Round 1: Koala Habitat Restoration of the Grassroots Environmental Grants program.

Grants of up to $75,000 (excluding GST) will be provided to eligible recipients for on-ground projects which seek to revegetate koala habitat and increase landscape connectivity in a Koala Priority Area (KPA) or an Area of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS).

Projects funded will be those which encourage community participation and engagement and that:

  • revegetate cleared or regrowth koala habitat; and
  • increase landscape connectivity for koalas.

Grant funding will only be provided for eligible locations within a KPA or an ARKS area, and which are identified as Koala Habitat or Koala Habitat Restoration areas.

Round 1: Conservation Outcomes for Marine Plants

Applications are now open for Round 1: Conservation Outcomes for Marine Plants of the Grassroots Environmental Grants program.

Grants of between $50,000 and $100,000 (excluding GST) are available for on-ground activities that directly generate Conservation Outcomes for Marine Plants within eligible Local Government Areas across South East Queensland.

This includes, but is not limited to, projects which seek to undertake activities such as revegetation, weed control, pest control, coastal sand dune and riverbank stabilisation or erosion control that have a direct benefit to Marine Plants.

Wildlife SEQ Incorporated Wildlife Housing to Improve Biodiversity This project aims to improve biodiversity by providing high-quality, long-lasting animal boxes as housing for birds, possums and gliders on SEQ Water lands and other suitable land, addressing the loss of natural hollows for protected species. Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc. Seeds of Change: Landcare Hub & Habitat Restoration This project aims to establish a dedicated Landcare Hub to strengthen organisational capacity, support community collaboration, and provide environmental resources. This project also aims to rehabilitate Mackay’s coastal wetlands through native species planting and community education on wetland ecosystems, weed management, and revegetation best practices to restore biodiversity and inspire grassroots stewardship of Queensland’s natural environment. $45,000.00 Mackay Regional Council
Moreton Bay Community Nursery Water Efficient Nursery Irrigation for Native Plants This project aims to install a new irrigation system in the Moreton Bay Community Nursery to allow for increase native plant growth, and to be more water efficient by reducing water consumption. $7,726.00 Moreton Bay City Council
Australian Animals Care & Education Inc Acqua Dolce This project aims to enhance turtle rehabilitation efforts by installing two 5,000-gallon rainwater tanks to create calibrated saltwater, recycling grey water with a water conditioner for environmental use, and repurposing a 24-foot shipping container for secure storage of essential supplies, rescue equipment, and volunteer PPE. $15,000.00 Gladstone Regional Council
Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands Inc Expanding Riparian Regeneration Planting on a Russell River Tributary This project aims to enhance TREAT's community engagement in habitat protection by planting 2500 trees to strengthen a riparian corridor adjacent to Wooroonooran National Park. The project activities aim to improve habitat connectivity for endangered species as well as water quality in the Russell River headwaters flowing into the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. $42,054.00 Tablelands Regional Council
Quoll Society of Australia Inc Quollity Corridors: Stepping Stones in the Southern Downs Phase 2.1 This project aims to undertake the next phase of the Stepping Stones program to restore habitat and support endangered species, including the spotted-tailed quoll, by planting 3,000 native plants to revegetate wildlife corridors in the Southern Downs, monitoring biodiversity with camera traps, and fostering stewardship through landholder and volunteer engagement. $40,301.00 Southern Downs Regional Council

Koala Action Inc. (KAI) Koala Habitat Restoration at Henry Clench Park This project aims to restore and expand koala habitat at Clear Mountain by planting up to 1,500 native tube stock including koala food trees, suppressing weeds, conducting structured monitoring, and engaging the community to enhance habitat connectivity, biodiversity, and stewardship to align with regional koala corridor initiatives. $29,508.00 Moreton Bay City Council
Fraser Island Defenders Organisation K'gari Weed Control and Associated Infrastructure This project aims to eradicate invasive weed species, including Abrus precatorius subsp africanus and Barleria repens, on 500 hectares of land across K'gari to prevent spread into the World Heritage-listed National Park, while supporting volunteers with herbicides, equipment, protective gear, and a storage shed. $39,261.00 Fraser Coast Regional Council
Mulgrave Landcare and Catchment Group Inc. Noosa Bush Beach and Creek Care (sponsored by Noosa Integrated Catchment Association Inc) Cooloosa Urban Wetland Rehabilitation Stage 5 - The Big One This project aims to restore the Cooloosa Urban Wetland by removing the invasive White Morning Glory vine and other weeds, preventing biodiversity loss, and revegetating the area with site-specific endemic plants, followed by ongoing maintenance to protect the ecosystem and wildlife habitat. $29,876.00 Noosa Shire Council
OzFish Unlimited Creekwatch: Riparian Repair, Weed Management and Environmental Monitoring Initiative This project aims to restore urban waterways and riparian zones in Townsville and Cairns through weed management, native revegetation, and environmental monitoring, while enhancing community engagement and long-term conservation efforts with improved tools, infrastructure, and volunteer training. $13,193.00 Cairns Regional Council
Barung Landcare Assoc Inc Improving Barung Landcare's Capacity to Undertake Environmental Conservation Works This project aims to enhance Barung Landcare’s capacity for bush regeneration and conservation across the Sunshine Coast by upgrading tools and equipment. Granite Belt Sustainable Action Network Inc Accommodate Nature: The Creek Conservation This project aims to enhance and conserve a critical riparian wildlife corridor along Accommodation Creek in Lyra, Queensland. This will be achieved by supporting landholders with revegetation efforts, training in corridor connectivity, pest and weed management, cultural awareness, and native plant propagation to align with regional biodiversity priorities. $44,579.00 Southern Downs Regional Council
Bat Care Capricornia Inc Flying Fox Monitoring Training Workshop This project aims to improve the monitoring and documentation of flying fox colonies in Capricornia by trialling twice-yearly surveys at Yeppoon and Emu Park. Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland Securing the Future of the Richmond Birdwing through Community Action This project aims to restore and reconnect critical habitat for the Richmond Birdwing butterfly in South-East Queensland.
