About Disability Action Week

Disability Action Week raises awareness of disability and celebrates the important contributions people with disability make in our state.

The week also promotes the value of working together to improve access and inclusion for all Queenslanders.

Disability Action Week 2026 will run from Sunday 22 November to Sunday 29 November 2026, ahead of International Day of People with Disability on 3 December.

The 2026 theme is Ready together: Preparing for every need, in every emergency.

Getting ready together means talking to your neighbours, colleagues and people in your community about access and inclusion during severe weather events and making sure everyone has what they need to prepare, stay safe and recover.

Disability Action Week is a chance to reflect on what we can all do to build a more accessible and inclusive Queensland.

A note on the language of disability

We acknowledge the importance of asking and respecting individual preferences, because we know every person’s experience of disability is unique.

Language around disability is evolving and people have different preferences when describing disability.

Some people prefer to be referred to as a 'person with disability' and others prefer 'disabled person'. Others prefer the use of language such as 'diverse abilities' rather than disability.

The language used on this website does not intend to exclude anyone.

Preferred language and communication accessibility needs may vary for people whose languages include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, migrant community languages and Auslan (Australian Sign Language).

We also recognise that people’s lives and experiences are shaped by disability, age, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, intersex status, ethnic origin or race.

The disability community is diverse, and it is important to recognise that not all disability is visible to others.
