Finding urgent or general medical care

You have the right to be safe in your relationships. If you have been hurt physically or psychologically there are people who can help.

People who work in the health system like doctors, nurses, and ambulance officers can support you if you are experiencing domestic and family violence or coercive control, or have experienced sexual violence.  You can tell them what happened, and they can help you talk to the police or a support service if you want to. They will never make you do anything you are not ready or safe to do.

Urgent medical care

If you need urgent medical care, call Triple Zero (000) on a phone or by using the Emergency Plus app. Follow their instructions. They will organise for the police or an ambulance to get you urgent help.

The ambulance may take you to a hospital if required. Hospital staff can help you if you are experiencing domestic family or sexual violence.

Find out who to call in a medical emergency and if you need after hours medical attention.

You can access free healthcare in public hospitals and health services and need help because of a domestic and family violence or sexual assault experience, even if you don’t have a Medicare card.

General medical care

You can talk to a trusted general practitioner (GP.) They can provide you with, or refer you to get, appropriate treatment and support for any physical, psychological or emotional issues.

If you’re worried about the cost of seeing a GP, you can get help with money, or you can choose a ‘bulk billing’ doctor who provides health care for free. You can also choose to visit a doctor who speaks your language and understands your culture and identity.
