Transfer registration as a buyer
Part of the Registration transfer topic
If you have bought or received a used vehicle, trailer or boat, you need to complete the transfer of the Queensland registration into your name.
On this page
In short
You can use this service to transfer the Queensland registration of a used vehicle, trailer or boat into your name as a buyer (or acquirer).
Transferring registration is 2 steps:
- The seller (or disposer) transfers the registration out of their name.
- The buyer transfers the registration into their own name and pays any fees and duty that apply.
See How to transfer registration as a buyer for the full application process and other ways to transfer registration.
What you should know
You must transfer a Queensland registration into your name within 14 days of buying or receiving a vehicle, trailer or boat.
Personalised or customised number plates
If the vehicle has personalised or customised number plates, and the seller is:
- selling them with the vehicle (personalised plates only), the seller must complete Part A of the Personalised number plate transfer application (F2963) form and sign Part A and Part B. You must also sign Part A and Part B.
- keeping them (or cancelling them), the seller must complete and sign the Remove and/or attach personalised/customised number plate application (F2964) form. The seller must attach standard number plates before the registration transfer can be processed.
Who can use this service
You can transfer registration as a buyer if:
- you have bought or received a vehicle, trailer or boat
- you have a Queensland driver licence or customer reference number (CRN)
- the seller has transferred the registration out of their name or signed Part A of the registration transfer application form
- the seller has given you a current safety certificate or certificate of inspection (unless the vehicle is exempt)
- the seller has given you a gas inspection certificate, if the vehicle is fitted with gas fittings or systems.
Do not use this service if:
- you want to transfer a vehicle, trailer or boat that is registered in another state or territory
Instead, register your vehicle or motorcycle - you are the seller transferring the registration out of your name
Instead, transfer registration as a seller - you want to swap the order of names on your registration
Instead, message us or call 13 74 68 - you want to transfer registration for a motorised mobility device
Instead, transfer a motorised mobility device registration - the vehicle is subject to enforcement action by the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER)
Instead, the seller must pay a SPER debt before transferring the registration - the vehicle is under a Number Plate Confiscation Notice issued by the Queensland Police Service
Instead, the seller should check the details on their confiscation notice.
How to transfer registration as a buyer
Choose how to transfer registration as a buyer and follow the steps.
