Advice for civil partnership notaries
You must be a registered civil partnership notary to conduct civil partnership declaration ceremonies in Queensland.
If you are not registered, you need to fill in a civil partnership notary application form and lodge it with us for assessment. If we approve your application, we will give you all the information you need to get started, as well as ongoing support.
There is a registration fee of $80.00 and annual renewal fee of $48.00.
Registering a civil partnership with a declaration ceremony
Before the ceremony
If you are registering a civil partnership with a declaration ceremony, the couple must lodge a notice of intention to enter into a civil partnership with you. You must complete the notice of intention details and then the couple must send a copy of the notice to us.
As the civil partnership notary, it is your responsibility to give each partner a written notice setting out the legal effect of a civil partnership.
After lodging their notice of intention, a couple may choose a date for their declaration ceremony that is:
- at least 10 clear full days later
- less than 12 months later.
For example, if you are given the notice of intention on the 1st day of a month, the earliest the declaration ceremony could be held would be the 12th day of that month.
Fill out and print the declaration of civil partnership form before the ceremony, so the couple can sign it on the day.
After the ceremony
As the civil partnership notary, you must lodge the following with us within 14 days after the ceremony:
- the couple's notice of intention to enter into a civil partnership
- the declaration of civil partnership form.
