Coomera Hospital takes shape with major contractor locked in

The new Coomera Hospital has reached a major milestone, with Multiplex appointed as the contractor to deliver the 600-bed hospital for the northern Gold Coast.

Once complete, the new hospital will provide vital health services closer to home for one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, helping meet increasing demand as the Gold Coast population continues to grow.

The new 12-storey Clinical Services Building will include an emergency department, intensive care unit, operating theatres, mental health services, maternity and paediatric services, pathology, renal services and inpatient units.

Gold Coast Health Executive Director Richard Christensen said clinician involvement had been central to the project’s planning and design from the beginning.

“When the Coomera Hospital opens, it will provide emergency services, surgical care, medical care, birthing, paediatrics and a wide range of other services.”

“It will be a great asset for the community, giving people access to more healthcare services closer to home.”

Major early works are already underway on site, including concrete pours to support the expanded footprint, retaining works, remodelling of existing structures and bulk earthworks. Early works are expected to ramp up from next month, with a focus on substructure works for the building cores and preparation of the hospital’s expanded footprint and access roads.

Gold Coast University Hospital Clinical Director Dr Hayley Frieslich said the project would be transformative for the region.

“Being able to treat patients in or closer to their own community is a huge step in our goals of holistic care,”

“It will allow us to bring additional world-class care to the northern Gold Coast and help attract the best doctors, nurses and allied health clinicians to the area.”

With the Gold Coast population projected to grow by up to 22 per cent by 2033, the new Coomera Hospital will play a critical role in meeting future demand while continuing to deliver safe, high-quality care.

Main construction works are due to commence following formal contract award in January 2027. The project will be delivered in two key phases, with Stage 1 expected to open in 2031 and Stage 2 in 2032.

The new Coomera Hospital is part of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan, which is delivering more than 2,600 additional beds, three new hospitals and major expansions at 10 hospitals across the state.
