“A lifeline”: New hub to help deliver more safe phones to DFV survivors

DV Safe Phone’s new National Operations Hub has opened on the Sunshine Coast to provide greater access to safe mobile phones to domestic and family violence survivors.

The Queensland Government has invested $1 million over four years to support DV Safe Phone’s work in collecting, repairing and distributing mobile phones to survivors.

A new National Operations Hub for DV Safe Phones will provide more volunteer workstations, dedicated phone testing facilities and a specialised repair laboratory.

Since the partnership began in July 2025, there have been more than 5,300 donated phones, with 2,621 refurbished devices distributed to Queenslanders in need.

The initiative is one part of the Queensland Government's efforts to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence.

DV Safe Phone Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ashton Wood said opening the Sunshine Coast hub was an incredible milestone.

“Every week, DV Safe Phone provides hundreds of free mobile phones to domestic violence victim-survivors through a national network of nearly 700 frontline domestic violence and law enforcement agencies,” he said.

“For someone experiencing domestic violence, having access to a safe phone can mean the difference between being trapped and being able to reach out for help.

“Our new headquarters gives us the space to significantly expand our operations, with more volunteer workstations, dedicated phone testing facilities and a specialised repair laboratory, allowing us to work towards meeting up to four times our current demand.”

Mr Wood said these phones helped with rebuilding a life free from violence.

“An unwanted mobile phone sitting in someone's drawer could become a lifeline for someone experiencing domestic violence,” he said.

“Our new Sunshine Coast headquarters means we can rescue, repair and repurpose more of those phones, getting them into the hands of people who need them most, completely free of charge.”
