The Woorabinda rangers care for country within the traditional lands of the Gaangalu Nation People, Wadja People and Barada Kabalbara Yetimarala People in central Queensland.
Priority work:
- rejuvenating Mimosa Creek and Horseshoe Lagoon, including biodiversity and water quality surveys, weed management, and infrastructure building and maintenance
- working with Woorabinda State School and Wadja Wadja High School to pass on environmental knowledge to younger generations
- managing known populations of weeds (parthenium, lantana) and surveying, mapping and managing of new weed populations
- re-establishing traditional fire management techniques through culturally appropriate methods combined with training in the use and application of modern equipment
- working with partners to rehabilitate eroded gullies in high priority catchments, such as the Fitzroy River catchment, to improve the quality of water flowing onto the Great Barrier Reef and habitat for threatened species.
