The Mithaka rangers care for Mithaka Country, an area west of Windorah in South-Central West Queensland. The rangers work on the Mithaka People’s non-exclusive native title determination over 33,752 square kilometres of country includes pristine rivers, rolling gibber plains and sandhill country, as well as a further 22,000 square kilometres of country immediately west of Cooper’s Creek.
Their priorities include:
- environmental and cultural preservation activities
- protecting flora, fauna and water health,
- preserving cultural sites and developing eco-friendly cultural tourism, engaging with pastoralists and other stakeholders
- bushfire mitigation, biosecurity compliance and environmental research
- partnerships with research, education, philanthropic and commercial organisations to share skills and knowledge.
