Ranger team
Woppaburra Rangers
Host organisation
Woppaburra TUMRA Aboriginal Corporation

Woppaburra rangers work from their bases on Rosslyn Bay and Woppa (Great Keppel Island) to care for their traditional sea country which includes the islands Woppa (South/Great Keppel Island), Konomie (North Keppel Island), Burye Burye (Humpy Island) and surrounding inshore reefs and ocean, within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World heritage area.

Their priorities include working with partners on:

  • cultural heritage preservation including site protection, developing a burning regime, eradicating weeds, controlling erosion and developing local education and ‘return to country’ programs.
  • bush regeneration involving weed control, native plant identification, seed collection and propagation, revegetation, research and documentation of cultural uses of plants
  • erosion control and mitigation of visitor impacts, such as boardwalk construction, at a midden site
  • reef restoration activities involving sea country mapping, water quality monitoring, and beach clean-ups with Tangaroa Blue
  • feral animal control, particularly goats on Woppa (Great Keppel Island) and possums and black rats on Konomie (North Keppel Island).
