Darumbal rangers look after their land and sea country around Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast and extending to the outer reef, encompassing the Darumbal Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA) area, which includes Shoalwater Bay and numerous islands and reefs.
Their priorities include:
- weed surveys and treatments, and cultural fire application
- marine and reef protection activities such as Crown-of-Thorns starfish control, seagrass, mangrove and water quality monitoring
- sea country values mapping to help develop a Darumbal Cultural Resilience Strategy
- compliance within Darumbal TUMRA relating to traditional hunting and fishing, and education about Darumbal knowledge and science to restore healing to country and Darumbal people’s well-being.
