The Pormpuraaw land and sea rangers play an important role in delivering cultural and natural resource management on the western coast of Cape York, south of the Edward River. Their services include:
- monitoring of 88km of sea turtle nesting beaches to collect information on nest survival rates
- design and installation of aluminium cages to protect the nests of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles from pigs and goannas
- crocodile survey and management in four major river systems, over a distance of 841km
- installation of exclusion fencing to protect sensitive wetlands and cultural sites
- regular junior ranger activities with Pormpuraaw State School and an annual Junior Ranger camp
- aerial control of feral pigs over an extensive area
- visitor management to reduce impacts on natural and cultural values including management of camping areas, installation of signage and advice to visitors
- early season burns to protect the cultural and natural health of Country
- control of restricted invasive plants including Rubber vine, Parkinsonia and Hymenachne.
