Sign a training contract

After you and your employer agree to enter into an apprenticeship or traineeship, you both need to sign a training contract—a formal agreement to work and train together for a length of time.

Your training contract is separate from your employment contract.

Purpose of training contract

By signing the training contract, you agree to:

  • turn up for work
  • participate in training to learn new skills
  • behave professionally in the workplace.

Your employer agrees to:

  • employ you for the length of the training contract
  • provide and arrange training both at work and with a training organisation
  • make sure you are safe in the workplace
  • make sure you receive a wage and entitlements.

Information in the training contract

The training contract includes details such as:

  • signatories (you, employer, parent/guardian)
  • start date or 'commencement date'
  • duration or 'nominal term/period'
  • qualification details.

Parental consent

You'll need your parent's or guardian's consent to sign the training contract if you are under 18 and still under their care and control.
