Eligibility and how to apply

Adventurous Journey Supervisors organise all aspects of the adventure activity training and are responsible for the safety of all participants under their care.

In Queensland, the qualifications required by an Adventurous Journey Supervisor vary depending on the type of journey you lead—urban, outdoor, or Adventurous Project.

Adventurous Journey Supervisors are accountable and responsible to the Award Centre who engaged them to undertake the journey. An Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisor can be linked to an Award Centre or can be an external contractor who has the required qualifications.

Eligibility

All Adventurous Journey Supervisors need to meet the general eligibility requirements below. Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisors have additional qualifications and requirements.

General eligibility requirements

To be eligible to become an Adventurous Journey Supervisor you must:

  • have completed an Adventurous Journey Supervisor application form and had it signed and approved by your Award Centre
  • be over 18 years of age
  • get a blue card if you don’t already have one
  • have a current First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate—find out about first-aid training
  • complete online module 1.

Adventurous Journey Supervisors are encouraged to attend the next available Orientation to The Duke of Ed workshop.

Urban journeys

Urban Adventurous Journey Supervisors need to meet the general eligibility requirements listed above.

To become an Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisor you must:

Adventurous Projects

Adventurous Projects can be urban or outdoor. They are more challenging than the other types of Adventurous Journeys and only Gold Award participants who are over 18 can do them.

To approve an urban Adventurous Project you must:

  • meet the eligibility requirements for Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisors
  • have a Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership or equivalent reflecting the outdoor medium being undertaken

How to apply

  1. Complete the Adventurous Journey Supervisor application (PDF, 1.3 MB) (DOCX, 94.8 KB) .
  2. Attach the required documentation:
    - signed copy of the volunteer code of conduct (PDF, 127KB) or (RTF, 75KB)
    - photocopy of current photo ID (e.g. your driver’s licence)
    - evidence you meet Queensland’s Working With Children Check (blue card system) requirements
    - photocopy of your current First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate.
  3. Present your application form with accompanying documents to the CEO or Principal of your Award Centre to be approved and signed.
  4. Submit a copy of your signed application form to the Queensland Award Operating Authority for processing.
  5. For Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisors only
    If you have indicated on your Adventurous Journey Supervisor Application form that you wish to be an Adventurous Journey Supervisor who leads outdoor Adventurous Journeys, you will need to meet the requirements of the Adventurous Journey Supervisor (AJS) Currency Register .
