Youth Reference Group

The Queensland Youth Reference Group provides young Queenslanders with opportunities to influence and inform decisions that affect their lives.

The group’s work program includes:

  • helping to develop a new Youth Charter
  • working out how the Queensland Government can get better at engaging with young people
  • advising the Queensland Youth Strategy Senior Officers Group that oversees the implementation of the strategy, coordinates across government, and makes sure the Queensland Government is working in line with the Queensland Youth Charter.

Who are the current members of the Queensland Youth Reference Group

The group will consist of 12 members who will represent and advance the collective interests of young people aged 12 to 25 years. The group is to be made up of 8 youth representatives and 4 sector representatives.

Queensland Youth Reference Group members will be appointed for a single term of either 12 or 24 months (to be decided by the Minister for Youth) and may withdraw at any time by notifying the Secretariat with 4 weeks’ notice.

Applications that are not successful in the first instance will remain current for a period of up to 12 months and may be considered for future vacancies in the Queensland Youth Reference Group.

Youth representatives

Youth representatives are:

  • between the ages of 12 and 25 years (parental consent is provided if under 18), and
  • Queensland residents.

Representatives are selected based on the following qualities:

  • has a community focus
  • is connected to community
  • is a good communicator
  • considers others
  • is resourceful
  • is insightful.

In addition, members of the group have been selected by giving consideration to their ability to represent young people who identify as: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer; culturally and/or linguistically diverse; living with disability; being a carer; or having had contact with Child Safety.

Sector representatives

Sector representatives are selected based on the following qualities:

  • having expertise in relation to one of the building blocks as outlined in the Queensland Youth Strategy
  • capacity to represent other sector stakeholders across the state about the needs of young people with whom they engage
  • working with and/or advocating for the needs of young people aged 12 to 25 years
  • having consent from their organisation to nominate.

Sector representatives are drawn from the business community, academia or human service peak bodies, and represent one of the 4 building blocks of the Queensland Youth Strategy:

  1. Supporting our most vulnerable young people
  2. Housing
  3. Healthy futures
  4. Education into employment.

Each representative has the capacity to engage and network with significant groups of young people and other sector organisations.


Nominations closed at midnight on 4 June 2017.

Nominations will be assessed by an independent panel and recommendations for appointment will be provided to the Minister for Youth for endorsement. All successful and unsuccessful nominees will be advised in writing.

Successful applicants will be announced in the near future.
