Qualifications for supervising outdoor journeys
There are 3 options for getting the required qualifications to become an Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisor:
- the minimum skill requirement for Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisors is equivalent to guide level for the outdoor activity you will be supervising
- a full Certificate III or IV in Outdoor Leadership (specifically required if you want to approve Adventurous Projects)
- recognition of your existing skills and experience (Recognition of Prior Learning).
Option 1: Qualification/s equivalent to guide level in the outdoor activity you will be supervising
If you choose this option, you will need to complete training in the outdoor medium you will be supervising.

Option 2: Certificate III or IV in Outdoor Leadership
A Certificate III or IV in Outdoor Leadership gives you expertise above the minimum requirements for Outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisors.
You will need a Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership if you want to be able to approve outdoor Adventurous Projects for Gold Award participants. The certification needs to include the outdoor medium being undertaken within the Adventurous Project.

Option 3: recognition of your existing skills and experience
Organise a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment if you believe you already have the outdoor skills, experience and training that are required for the above qualifications.
The assessor will consider your skills and knowledge and match them against the relevant qualification.
You will need to present a portfolio of evidence which could include:
- logbooks of at least the recent 3 years of outdoor activity
- third party verifications
- photos of your work
- your job description (if relevant) and resume
- third party testimonials.
Adventurous Journey Supervisor (AJS) Currency Register
Once you complete your training, you are required to register with the Adventurous Journey Supervisor (AJS) Currency Register.
