Search the records

There are two ways to search and locate records at the archives.

ArchivesSearch catalogue

ArchivesSearch is our online catalogue, which you can use to explore the historical collection held at QSA. If you haven't used the system before we recommend creating an account. This will allow you to save searches, view available digital copies, request a digital copy, and order items to be viewed at our QSA Reading Room. However, you can search the collection without an account. Search help is available to assist in using the catalogue.

Indexes are lists of names and other information that we have extracted from a selection of registers (lists) in our collection. Indexes only include a small portion of the names mentioned in the archives, so although they are good place to start your research, you may need to do a more extensive search in the ArchivesSearch catalogue.

Search the indexes by choosing an index topic below and the relevant index. Enter the name of the person you are looking for under ‘Search by'. For some indexes you can also search by ship name or location for example. If you see a "View image" link in your search results, click on the link to view the archival record online. If your results show an "Add to cart" option, this means you cannot see the record online, but you can order a copy of the record. Click on "Add to cart" to pay for the order and add delivery details. The "Item details" link takes you to the entry in our catalogue for that item.
