Fair Trading offers consumer advice on managing stolen wages payments

Queensland’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) welcomes the release of a guide developed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities set to receive payments as part of the Queensland Government’s stolen wages settlement scheme.

The guide was released by the Indigenous Consumer Assistance Network (ICAN).

It was produced by the North Queensland Consumer Taskforce (NQCT), which is chaired by ICAN and made up of community groups, government agencies, consumer protection regulators and Ombudsman schemes.

Fair Trading North Queensland Regional Manager Len Curran said the guide has been developed to support community workers and financial councillors who are providing assistance to claimants under the Stolen Wages Settlement Distribution Scheme.

“Regrettably, the OFT sees many people who are ripped off by scammers, through high-pressure selling tactics and other exploitative business practices,” Mr Curran said.

“It is vitally important that financial counsellors and community workers have the most up to date information available about government agencies and support organisations, and the services they can provide, so they can assist their clients quickly and easily.”

The guide can be accessed free online, can be downloaded to a device, saved, or printed for easy use offline.
