Special primary victims

A victim is considered a special primary victim if they are:

  • a child (under 18)
  • a person with impaired capacity
  • a victim of a sexual offence or an act of domestic and family violence
  • a victim of an offence committed by a person in a position of power and/or trust over them
  • being threatened or intimidated by the person who committed the violence, or by someone else.

A special primary victim must report the act of violence before applying for financial assistance. You can make a report to:

  • police
  • doctor
  • psychologist
  • counsellor
  • domestic violence worker or service.

Safety and security costs

If you are not safe please contact 000 or your local police station.

Victim Assist may be able to provide you with financial assistance to help you and your family recover from an act of violence.

Security upgrades can assist to help make your home feel safe. You can apply to Victim Assist for expenses that are related to improving the security on your property. If you are renting, you will need approval from your landlord to install any safety upgrades.

You can apply for the cost to relocate if it is not safe for you to stay where you are. This can include the cost for you and your belonging to move to a safe place.

If you are feeling unsafe and need somewhere to stay please contact DV Connect on 1800 811 811 and they can arrange for crisis accommodation.
