Energy Savvy Families program

The Energy Savvy Families program in regional Queensland provides digital meters to eligible low income families to help them gain a greater understanding of when and how they use their electricity.


Digital meters can help these households manage their finances by regularly reviewing their electricity usage. They can pay their electricity bills in smaller, more manageable monthly amounts rather than receiving quarterly bills.

The families also receive local community support and access to energy usage educational resources.

Phase 1

5,500 regional Queensland homes now have digital meters.

The installation was delivered by Ergon Energy from $5.5 million in funding from State Infrastructure Fund’s $180 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program (SRIPP).

The Energy Savvy Families program is a combined initiative of Ergon Energy Retail, Queensland Council of Social Service, CitySmart and the Queensland Government.

Next phase

The next phase of the program is currently being developed. Ergon Energy will identify and contact eligible participants.

The chosen participants will not have to do anything regarding the installation of their digital meters.

These families will be encouraged to participate in energy usage education opportunities and to choose monthly billing to improve their ability to manage their cash flow.

$4 million has been invested under the Affordable Energy Plan to extend the program to a further 4,000 low income households in regional Queensland.
