Interpreter and patient support services

Many hospitals and health centres offer support services that are not directly related to patient health, such as:

  • general advice and guidance
  • interpreter services
  • counselling and chaplaincy services.

Ask hospital staff to arrange a service for you, if needed.

Patient liaison services

Patient liaison services support patients in Queensland Health hospitals and health centres. They can help:

  • resolve any issues and concerns you may have with the health service
  • liaise with medical staff about your concerns
  • provide general information and advice.

Talk to hospital and health service staff to find out what services are available.

Interpreter services

Interpreter services are available at all Queensland Health hospitals and health centres 24 hours a day, at no charge to the patient.

They help by relaying spoken information between the patient and the medical practitioner, either:

  • on-site—physically present at the time
  • through video conference
  • over the phone.

Ask staff to arrange an interpreter for your next appointment, if needed.

Counselling and chaplaincy services

Counselling

Many hospitals offer counselling services for patients and their families.

Skilled social workers can help with:

  • dealing with a diagnosis and illness
  • emotional and family issues
  • personal goals.

Social workers can also advise of other helpful services that may benefit you.

Chaplaincy

Chaplains from many religious faiths regularly visit hospital wards.

If you would like to access chaplaincy services, please let hospital staff know.
