Home Quarantine Check In explained
The Home Quarantine Check In service is a tool, that aims to enable home quarantine under certain circumstances by improving monitoring and providing confidence about the compliance of persons who are given a direction notice to quarantine at home. It will also enable practical and emotional support to be available to people quarantining at home.
If you are directed to quarantine at home, you will need a smart phone to participate in the Home Quarantine Check In. If you do not have a Smart Phone you will be contacted by an alternative phone at various points in time during your quarantine period to check on your health and wellbeing and your compliance with the quarantine direction.
When participating in Home Quarantine Check In, you will receive and need to respond to a daily text messages with a web link that is safe and secure to click on to demonstrate compliance with home quarantine requirements. The text message will also include questions about your well-being and health and depending on your answers may prompt additional support. To be marked as compliant each day, you are required to:
- respond to the text message within 10 minutes; and
- be at your nominated quarantine address.
The Home Quarantine Check In uses the location service on your mobile phone. The service enables you to check-in each day at the address you have been directed to quarantine at for the 14 days, as listed on your Quarantine Direction notice. This enables Queensland Government to monitor compliance accurately and efficiently, to keep you and the community safe.
Throughout your home quarantine period, you will also receive regular contact from the Queensland Government by phone (that will not have a caller ID) and text message.
You may also receive phone calls from your local public health unit, and other support agencies during your quarantine period.

Direction to quarantine at home
If you have been directed to quarantine at home, you must stay at the address stated on your quarantine direction notice until the end date and avoid contact with other people. Home quarantine is when people who have been or may have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 or have returned from a COVID-19 hotspot need to stay in their home to stop the spread of COVID-19 into the Queensland community.
If your place of residence or premises is unsuitable, and alternative private accommodation such as AirBnB is not available, quarantine will be required to be undertaken in a nominated Government Quarantine Hotel.
During quarantine you cannot:
- leave your home except:
- in an emergency situation
- to get tested for COVID-19
- to get essential medical care at a hospital
- to leave Queensland by the most direct route practicable
- for safety reasons (to avoid immediate injury or to escape a risk of harm)
- go into public places including your work or the shops or school (if other children are quarantining). You will need to let your employer know that you cannot attend your workplace until you are told it is safe to do so
- let anyone into your home unless they:
- are required to provide medical care, including a COVID-19 test
- are entering for an emergency
- are essential to the operation of the property e.g. a farm worker. If a worker must attend the property, they must not enter the home where people are quarantining.
Others who usually reside in the same residence, will also need to quarantine with you or live at another residence until your quarantine period is finished.
- go into your garden or courtyard if you live in a house, provided it is not shared with any other people are not quarantining.
You must comply with all the requirements of your home quarantine to keep everyone safe.
My home quarantine check in requirements
You are required to respond daily to compliance and wellbeing checks via the link in the text message including the registration of your location as soon as you receive the text message. These messages will be sent randomly to you throughout each day you are in quarantine.
You will be asked to provide Information on your:
- Health and welfare
- whether you have left your premises
- whether you have had any visitors to your premises
- current location (which must be your nominated quarantine address)
If you fail to respond to the text message within 10 minutes, without a reasonable excuse, you will receive a follow up phone call from the Queensland Government (that will not have a caller ID). You may then be subject to a compliance visit by an emergency officer (public health).
If you are in quarantine with minors (children under 18 years) your answers also apply to any young person in your care.
Setting location services on my device
The Home Quarantine Check In service requires you to enable location services on your device i.e. mobile phone. Depending on your device and operating system the steps to ensure location services will differ.
Connecting to a Wi-Fi network when checking in can improve the accuracy of location services.

The Home Quarantine Check In requires you to enable location on your Apple Device. For devices running iOS 14 and above the user must enable precise location.
How to share your location
With iOS 14, some apps can use Precise Location to get to your specific location. To share your Precise Location. Here's how:
- Go to Settings > Privacy, then select Location Services.
- Select Safari Websites*, then turn Precise Location on. If you use a different web browser than Safari (e.g. Chrome) for step 2 you will need to apply this setting for your selected browser

How to turn location on for your phone
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Touch and hold Location. If you don't find Location:
- Tap Edit or Settings.
- Drag Location into your Quick Settings.

Getting COVID-19 tests during home quarantine
If you are directed to quarantine, you will be requested to get tested for COVID-19 during quarantine.
You will be asked to attend a COVID-19 testing clinic on day 12 of your mandatory quarantine period or at other times as directed by the local public health unit. In some situations, you may be requested to get an earlier test. The timing of this testing is important and, if delayed, may affect when you can be released from quarantine. If you refuse to get tested at day 12 or at other times when requested to do so, your quarantine period may be extended for an additional 14 days.
Please note, household members also required to quarantine do not need to present for COVID-19 testing. However, If any household member is feeling unwell with COVID-19 symptoms, regardless how mild, they must immediately get tested.
If getting a COVID-19 test it is preferred that you go to a drive-through testing facility, whenever possible.
Please wear a mask when you attend the clinic for testing. When you arrive at the clinic, tell the healthcare professionals that you are in quarantine and are attending for routine testing. If it is for symptomatic testing, please make sure you also tell the health professionals that you or the person being tested is in quarantine.
Completing my home quarantine
If you have completed your quarantine without developing symptoms and have been tested for COVID-19 on day 12 of your quarantine and have received a negative result, you will be able to leave quarantine on the date specified on your quarantine direction notice. Your release from quarantine will be advised by a final text message from Queensland Health. If you have been advised by your local public health unit that your quarantine period has been extended, you must follow these instructions.
You must continue to practice physical distancing and good hand and respiratory hygiene and continue to follow any Queensland Public Health Directions. If you become unwell and have any cold or flu-like symptoms return home straight away get tested and call 13 HEALTH.
How will my privacy be maintained?
The information you provide as part of the Home Quarantine Check In will be used by Queensland Health, Hospital and Health Services and other government agencies to ensure you are following your quarantine direction.
