This project will implement an Indigenous community-based strategy of location, identification and documenting 50 middens between Beachmere and Noosa River. The aim is to train Indigenous people to monitor, analyse and interpret these cultural features, providing credit towards a Certificate 3 in Cultural Heritage and other learning pathways, and contribute to the development of a strategic employment and cultural heritage protection plan for the Sunshine Coast and its National Parks (including for eco-cultural tourism enterprises).
The project will be overseen by Turnstone Archaeology, with bulk of the work done by trained Indigenous community members recording to a standardised format for extraction of data and cross reference. Selected middens will have a small keyhole test pit excavated to determine depth, age and environmental change. Key midden sites identified as having strategic values will require carbon dating.
