School community and volunteering
You can get involved at your child's school—it will help you keep up-to-date with what is going on at the school, and help build positive relationships between you and the school community.
Volunteering at school
Volunteers are always welcome to help with:
- tuckshop
- excursions
- reading support in the classroom
- sport—coaching, umpiring or helping out at carnivals
- parent associations
- fetes and other school events.

Blue card
The blue card is a system for monitoring a person's suitability for working with children. Volunteers at schools must hold a blue card before starting, unless they are parents of a child at the school.
Parent associations
Most state schools will have a Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association. Non-state schools will have a Parents and Friends (P&F) Association.
All schools rely on their community to help with decision making in areas like uniforms and behaviour, and to help with funding and supporting school organisations.

School councils
Many schools have a school council that plays a more formal role in setting the future direction of the school. Parents are represented on every school council and are elected every 2 years.

State Education Week
During State Education Week state schools across Queensland open their doors to the community to showcase their achievements.
Performances and extra-curricular activities
Many schools hold public performances for their music and drama students. Keep up to date through school newsletters and websites.
