Training organisation role and responsibilities

About 4,000 registered training organisations provide vocational education and training across Australia. They can issue nationally recognised qualifications and are regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority.

Training organisations include:

  • TAFE colleges and institutes
  • adult and community education providers
  • community organisations
  • schools and higher education institutions
  • commercial and enterprise training providers
  • industry bodies
  • other organisations that meet registration requirements.

Role

You and your employer will need to choose a training organisation to partner with throughout the apprenticeship or traineeship. Your chosen training organisation will be known as your supervising registered training organisation, or SRTO.

The training organisation will:

  • help you develop your training plan
  • deliver training
  • assess the achievement of skills or competencies
  • issue the qualification upon completion.

Responsibilities

Your training organisation will be responsible for the following activities during the life of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

They will:

  • assess your employer's ability to supervise and train you
  • negotiate and develop the training plan with you and your employer
  • deliver your training (in class, online, or mixed mode)
  • assess your skills
  • tell you about training costs and funding implications.

Learning support

If you need it, they will provide you with literacy and numeracy support to help you complete your studies.

Training progress

They will:

  • give you a training record within 14 days of the training plan being signed
  • regularly check that you are keeping your training record up to date
  • notify us, the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training, if you aren't progressing fast enough.

Completion

They will:

  • sign a completion agreement together with you and your employer, when you've finished all your training and assessment
  • send it to us within 10 days of signing it
  • send you your qualification certificate upon successful completion
  • contact us if the employer doesn't sign a completion agreement, despite you having fulfilled all your training and assessment requirements.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

Your training organisation will have additional responsibilities if you are a school-based apprentice or trainee.

Complaints and disputes

If you have any problems with your training organisation, they are responsible for managing this formally, by following their internal complaints process.
