Playgroups

Play is an important part of a child's development. Through play, a child learns, builds confidence and develops social and physical skills.

Playgroups offer a wonderful opportunity for younger children to come together and play in a safe, relaxed and welcoming environment. Playgroups are low cost and inclusive—all children under school age are welcome.

Playgroup types

Community playgroups

You can find community playgroups in many locations throughout Queensland. These playgroups are run by parents and caregivers who work together to offer children a variety of early learning experiences. All children and parents are welcome.

Supported playgroups

In supported playgroups, a coordinator facilitates sessions to empower families to support children's development through play. They work with families to help them develop the skills to run their playgroup independently. Coordinators focus on engaging families from one or more of the following:

  • families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • Indigenous families
  • families with mental health or disability issues (either the parent or child)
  • teenage and young parent families
  • families who are socially isolated, vulnerable or disadvantaged.

PlayConnect

PlayConnect is a playgroup for children aged up to 6 who have Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or ASD-like symptoms. Each session includes activities that suit the needs of children with ASD. A development worker facilitates the sessions until the parents are comfortable managing the group themselves. Information about other services for children with ASD is shared during the sessions also.

Playgroup Plus program

In the Playgroup Plus Program, a qualified early childhood facilitator guides the play experiences, while parents manage the playgroup and assist where necessary. There is a lot more planning involved in these sessions, which have a dedicated baby area and play program. Activities can be structured or unstructured and may include music, dance, storytelling or creative play.
