Community groups help people get together for a common purpose or to share an interest. The group may provide support for its members, or for others in their local community.

General community groups

To find a community group or organisation near you:

Neighbourhood Watch Queensland supports groups in their efforts to strengthen and connect our communities for a safe and secure Queensland. On their website, you can also subscribe to daily or weekly email updates for your region, or search for a Neighbourhood Watch blog in your local area. Children’s playgroups

Playgroup is an exciting starting point for children from birth to 5 years and their families to experience connection and learning through play.

Play matters Australia ensures all playgroups offer a fun, safe and stimulating environment for children, families and communities to achieve optimal child wellbeing and development. Play Matters Australia is there to help you and your family find the perfect playgroup near you.

Playgroups are set up and run by parents and caregivers, and provide children with opportunities to learn through a range of play-based activities set up to meet their varying needs. Activities at Playgroup may include:

  • music and singing
  • imaginative play
  • outdoor and free play
  • art and craft activities
  • outings.

Groups for young people

  • Visit our Youth website to find safe places to hang out, sport and recreation info and school holiday activities.
  • Find out about youth programs such as Duke of Edinburgh, Bridge Award, YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament and the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program.
  • The Police Citizens Youth Club Queensland (PCYC) has 54 clubs throughout Queensland. You can search their website to find a club near you. They also run Indigenous community sport and recreation programs as well as Youth Management Teams, which are social and leadership development groups for high school aged young people who wish to improve their leadership skills and give back to–and connect with–their communities.
  • Find your nearest YMCA to get involved in your local community.

LGBTIQ+ groups

  • Open Doors Youth Service provides support services to LGBTIQAP+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy young people aged 12 to 24 and their families who live in South East Queensland. Their social groups include:
    - Drop In (under 18s group)
    - Young and Proud (over 18s)
    - Jellybeans (for Transgender and Gender Diverse young people aged 12 to 24)
    - Yarning Circle (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people)
    - Art Group.
