Changes to the blue card system

If you work or volunteer with kids in Queensland, changes to the blue card system from 31 August 2020 will make it better for you, and better for our kids. These changes strengthen and streamline the blue card system under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.

A key change has been the introduction of the No Card, No Start laws. This means you must have a valid blue card before you can work with kids. The new laws also include stricter requirements for people who rely on an exemption to work or volunteer with children. To further strengthen the system, two new terms have been introduced—‘restricted person’ and ‘restricted employment’—as well as new offences, which mean certain people will not be able to rely on the current exemptions to work or volunteer with children.
