Healthy teeth
For good oral health, there are 3 important things to remember.
What you eat and drink
Foods and drinks high in sugar and acid contribute to tooth decay. The more often you have sugary foods and drinks the more likely you are to experience tooth decay—holes in your teeth which result in the need for fillings, or in severe cases removal of the tooth. To keep a healthy smile:
- drink plenty of fluoridated tap water
- choose healthy snacks like fruit, vegetables and cheese
- limit sugary and acidic food and drinks.
Brushing and flossing
Regular brushing and flossing helps protect your teeth from decay and prevents gum disease.
You should:
- floss your teeth once a day before you brush your teeth
- brush your teeth at least twice a day (after breakfast and just before bed)
- use a soft bristled toothbrush with a small head and a fluoride toothpaste
- have regular dental check-ups.
Fluoride in Queensland water
Fluoride occurs naturally in water, plants, rocks, soil, air and food.
Topping up fluoride levels in drinking water doesn’t change the taste or smell of water and is a safe and effective way to protect against tooth decay.
Fluoride makes teeth resistant to decay and can repair damage to your teeth before it becomes permanent.
Water fluoridation gives extra protection against tooth decay, but a healthy diet, regular brushing and flossing and regular dental check-ups are all essential for good oral health.
