Getting your driver licence

Read information to help young drivers get their Queensland driver licence.

Learning to drive

Before getting your driver licence, you need to apply for a learner licence. A learner licence allows people aged 16 or older to learn to drive on Queensland roads.

Learner drivers under the age of 25 need to log:

  • 100 hours of supervised on-road driving, including 
  • 10 hours of night driving (between sunset and sunrise).

These hours need to be recorded in a learner logbook before applying for your driver licence.

Before getting your driver licence for a car, motorbike or heavy vehicle, take a practice road rules test.

You may be required to pass different tests before getting your Queensland driver licence. These include tests on:

Once you have a provisional licence—P1, you will need to pass the hazard perception test. This is an online computer-based test which measures a driver's ability to anticipate and appropriately respond to potentially dangerous situations while driving.

All P1 provisional licence holders must pass the hazard perception test before they can graduate to either a P2 provisional or open licence (dependent on age).

The Indigenous Driver Licensing Program aims to increase the number of Indigenous people driving in far north Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands.

Interstate driver licences

You only need an interstate licence if you live outside of Queensland. Contact the relevant transport authority to get an interstate licence.
