Linking to PDFs
Linking to a single PDF
Comply with the following conventions when creating a hyperlink to a PDF file:- Keep the 'name' of the link short and precise.
- To indicate the type and size of the file, use the standard format - left round bracket, acronym for type of file, comma, space, size in kilobytes, space, lowercase 'k', uppercase 'B', right round bracket -
for example, (PDF, 42 kB). - If the file type is obvious from the context in which the link appears, you may not need to include the acronym - for example,
These guidelines (42 kB) are also available in PDF format. - Notify the user that Adobe Reader is required to view PDFs.
Note: It is essential to use an uppercase 'B' when referring to kilobytes (kB) to differentiate from kilobits (kb).
Linking to multi-part PDFs from a web page
To link your web page to the PDF files:
- Create a short but descriptive 'contents' list, including a brief summary of the contents of each separate file if the 'name' in this list is not self-explanatory.
- Create a hyperlink to each PDF file from the relevant 'name' in the 'contents' list, following the same conventions as are used for linking to single PDFs.
