Web 2.0 conference - showcasing social media for Government
The Web 2.0 Conference was held on Tuesday 9 August 2011 and showcased the use of social media in:
- government service delivery
- citizen/community engagement
- information dissemination
- internal collaboration.
The conference was designed for the public sector and explored how government agencies are using social media - what has worked well, what hasn’t worked as well and lessons learned.
Speakers included representatives from government agencies and industry professionals from across Australia.

These have included Future Melbourne, an award winning world-first 'City Plan that Anyone Can Edit'; wePlan Parks Victoria, leveraging social media to 'Help Guide the Future of Victoria's Parks'; VPS Hub, the re-engineering of the Victorian Government Intranet for Web 2.0; Victoria's Emergency Services, a 15,000 strong official Facebook community; Trade Mission 2.0, Dept of Business & Innovation; and CFA FireReady, Australia's first official mobile application for real-time location-aware bushfire warnings. In each case, success depended upon a process that first established a clear vision, cultivated shared ownership amongst stakeholders, and then integrated social technologies with existing business process. This presentation showcases the application of this process to three distinct Gov 2.0 projects.
