To be effective online, content needs to be clear, concise and well-structured. This requires skill, training and hard work, and the services of a qualified web editor, online communicator, content producer, or content editor can be invaluable.

Duties

Key duties of such a role usually include:

  • providing leadership and guidance to business areas and content experts on web-related issues and user-centred design principles, particularly when developing new content products
  • conducting content research and development to keep sites up to date and user-focused
  • liaising with clients to set objectives and agree on requirements, responsibilities and milestones for individual development projects
  • working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • developing content that is accurate, well-structured and meets client needs while adhering to departmental style guidelines
  • working with design and development teams to assess business requirements, determine schedules, and create the best solution for the client
  • helping develop a team-based culture that is collaborative and focused on providing excellent client service
  • responding to customer feedback and addressing raised issues.

Selection criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with tight and often conflicting timelines in a complex environment.
  2. Proven strong editorial skills, including attention to detail and proofreading skills, and the ability to write content for the web using a predefined style guide.
  3. Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability in building good working relationships.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to customer service and a proven ability to deliver projects that meet client needs.
  5. Demonstrated understanding of:
    • internet functionality and the concept of user-centred design in relation to structuring and developing online content.
    • how the internet can support business improvement.
