Policy and guidelines for online community engagement
The Online community engagement policy applies to all departments conducting major policy consultation exercises. Policy consultations are those community engagement activities where there is a genuine opportunity for citizens to contribute to the development, implementation, evaluation or review of public policy or legislation.
The following are outside the scope of this policy:
- consultation exercises being run internal to government, or where the input of the general public will not be sought
- statistical market research
- the selection and management of social media (refer to the Official use of social media guideline).

The Online community engagement guideline has been developed to assist public sector employees in gaining an understanding of how online technology can be used to support community engagement. The document also provides guidance on the implementation of the Online community engagement policy. The document should be read in conjunction with the Official use of social media guideline.
