Driving and mobile phones

Talking or texting with a mobile phone in your hand while driving is illegal, even when stopped at traffic lights. If caught, you’ll be fined $330 and lose 3 demerit points.

Learner drivers or P1 provisional drivers under 25 years must not use a mobile phone—this includes hands-free. Learner drivers’ supervisors and passengers are also banned from using mobile phones on loudspeaker function.

Driving safely with mobile phones

  • Turn off your mobile phone before you get in the car—you won't be tempted to answer your phone.
  • If you must have your mobile phone on, install a hands-free kit—you can drive and talk on your phone more safely, but don't forget to keep concentrating on driving.
